Formerly known as the 86ers after the year of their founding, Vancouver's A-League team changed its name to the Whitecaps following the 2000 season. The Whitecaps was also the name of Vancouver's team in the NASL until that league folded in 1984. The original Whitecaps won their lone NASL championship in 1979. The 86ers won the Canadian Soccer League championship in 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1991. Vancouver joined the American Professional Soccer League following the CSL's folding in 1992.
