Varina is a tiny (population about 90) town in Pocahontas County in northwest Iowa. Founded in 1899 on the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway, Varina is named for the plantation home of the Indian princess Pocahontas after she married John Rolfe in Virginia. Like most rural Iowa towns, Varina is smaller than it once was, but with its slogan of "the small town with the big heart," it shows no sign of fading away. The town built a new fire station and new water plant facility in 1998. Varina students attend the Newell-Fonda schools, or the private Catholic school in Fonda. The town has a public library and a park with tennis, play equipment and a shelter house. Nearby are Little Clear Lake and Sunken Grove, which offer boating, fishing, hunting, hiking and camping. Harry Reasoner, the television news commentator, grew up in Varina, where his father was superintendent of schools.
