Pocahontas County is a largely rural area in northwest Iowa. Various tribes of Indians roamed the area in earlier times, and hunted buffalo here. The economy has been based on farming since the area was first settled by Americans of European descent in the late 1800's. The land is generally flat and extremely fertile. In recent decades, various small industries have been established. There are nine towns in the county: Fonda, Gilmore City (partly in Humboldt County), Havelock, Laurens, Palmer, Plover, Pocahontas, Rolfe, and Varina. The towns peaked in population in the middle 1900's, and the area has seen a gradual decline in population since then. Current county population is just over 8,600. People who live here treasure the community involvement, friendly neighbors, good schools, and low cost of living they find in Pocahontas County. Active economic development organizations at the county and town level are at work. Two high speed internet providers make telecommuting an option.
