Center Wayne Gretzky began his professional hockey career with the WHA Indiana Racers but was soon traded to the Edmonton Oilers. He stayed with the Oilers when the team moved to the NHL. His trade to the Los Angeles Kings in the summer of 1988 is regarded as a turning point for hockey's popularity in California. Gretzky spent a short stint with the St. Louis Blues in the spring of 1995 before signing as a free agent with the New York Rangers. Gretzky retired at the end of the 1998-99 season. He is now involved in hockey as part owner of the Phoenix Coyotes.
