The UK Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) is the successor to the UK Ice Hockey Superleague (ISL). It came into being at the end of the 2002-3 season following the collapse of the ISL. It is now the top-level professional ice hockey league in the UK. The EIHL is made up of eight teams from throughout the United Kingdom. The majority of players in the teams are from outside the UK, and are mostly North American, although the EIHL is placing a greater emphasis on the development of local talent. The teams compete in a league system throughout the season which runs from September to April. At the end of the regular season, a Play-Off competition is held between the top teams in the league. In addition, there is a Challenge Cup competition that all teams take part in. The winners for 2003-4 are :
League Champions : Sheffield Steelers
Challenge Cup Winners : Nottingham Panthers
Play-Off Champions : Sheffield Steelers
In the 2004-5 season, it is planned to have competitions between EIHL teams and those of the British National League.
