The martyrs of Uganda are a group of young men and teenage boys who died for the faith in what was then Buganda, between 1885 and 1887. The first martyr was an Anglican bishop, James Hannigan. The second was a Roman Catholic, Joseph Msaka Balikuddembe, who was murdered for protesting the bishop's death. In all there were 45 known martyrs, 22 Catholic and 23 Protestant. The Catholic martyrs were canonized in 1964, and are on the calendar as St. Charles Lwanga and Companions.
