For members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the popularity of genealogy work represents the outpouring of the Spirit of Elijah, prophesied to return to the earth in the Last Days (Malachi 4:5). Members of the Church believe that Malachi's words were fulfilled on April 3rd, 1836 at the Kirtland, Ohio Temple, when Elijah proclaimed his mission to "turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the children to the fathers"; (Doctrine and Covenants 110:12-16).
