A litany is a call-and-response form of prayer. A list of titles or attributes (of God or a saint), of groups of people, or of petitions is met with a repetitive response. A litany is analogous to a song which has varied verses and a repeated refrain. Some litanies are liturgical, e.g., the Kyrie, the Agnus Dei, the Litany of the Saints. Most, however, are optional personal devotions.
