"Horse cavalry" covers military or police units, employing cavaliers mounted on horses. These cavaliers may operate from the saddle; they may also use horses only for transportation to and from a site of an engagement, and dismount to operate independently of their horses. Horse cavalry has existed for thousands of years, and indeed is one of the hallmarks of civilization. Although the 20th century saw a sharp decline in the military application of horse cavalry, such units have seen something of a resurgence in theatres such as Afghanistan and sub-Saharan Africa.
