More than 2,500 years ago, Plato wrote of a utopia ruled by Nomos, the God of Law, while his student Aristotle asked whether it was better for a king to rule according to law or rule according to discretion. The Rule of Law continues to be important as a normative ideal, and scholars argue for its definition, its boundaries, and its value. But it has also become important as a topic of behavioral research, as scholars ask under what conditions law rules, and what concrete social differences may be expected from the Rule of Law.
