These are methods of preventing pregnancy after unprotected sexual intercourse. They have a higher success rate if used within 24 hours, and are of no benefit after 72 hours. None are guaranteed to prevent pregnancy, and none protect against sexually transmitted infections.
( The term does not cover abortion, although some people who object to abortion also object to emergency contraception. )
