Lao is a member of the Lao-Phutai subgroup of the Tai-Kadai language family spoken by as many as 4 million speakers principally located in and around the Mekong River Valley region of south-east Asia. It is also known as Laotian Tai, Laotian, Phou Lao, Eastern Thai, Lum Lao, Lao Wiang, Lao Kao, Rong Kong, Tai Lao, Lao-Tai, Lao, Lao-lum and Lao-Noi.
