Javanese is a Western Malayo-Polynesian member of the Austronesian language family spoken by approximately 42% of the population of Indonesia. Speakers are principally located on the island of Java with smaller populations in Kalimantan, Maliku, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Singapore, Sulawesi, Sumatra and West Papua (Irian Jaya). Javanese is also known as Jawa and Djawa.
