The Turkic language family comprises some thirty languages. A detailed classification of the Turkic languages is still ongoing. So far, the Turkic languages are classified into the following subgroups: 1) Oguz or Southwestern Turkic (Turkish, Gagauz, Azeri (Azerbaijani), Turkmen, Salar). 2) Kypchak or Northwestern Turkic (Kazak (Kazakh), Karakalpak, Nogay, Kumyk, Karachay-Balkar, Karaim, Tatar, Bashkir (Bashkort), Kyrgyz (Kirghiz, Kirgiz), Altay (Altai)). 3) Chagatay or Southeastern Turkic (Modern Uygur, Uzbek, Lop, Mogoli). 4) Northeastern Turkic (Yakut, Dolgan, Tuva, Tofa, Khakas, Shor, Chulym, Western Yugur (Yellow Uygur)). 5) Khalaj. 6) Chuvash. The Oguz, Kypchak and Chagatay subgroups constitute the centre of the Turkic linguistic area, the remaining languages are spoken along its outer rim. Some scholars classify the Turkic languages as belonging to the Altaic language family, together with the Mongolic and the Manchu-Tungusic languages.
