Danish physicist (1777-1851) who discovered electromagnetism. The unit of magnetic field strength was named the Oersted in his honor. Additionally, he worked on the compressibility of gases and liquids, on diamagnetism, discovered piperine (a pungent component of pepper), and was the first to produce pure aluminium.
