On Friday, March 11, 2011 at 05:46:23 UTC (14:46 local time) a magnitude 8.9 earthquake, the largest earthquake to hit Japan in recorded history, occurred off the Oshika Peninsula, 130 kilometers east of Sendai, Honshu, Japan. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported wave amplitudes of up 7.3 meters were recorded on the coast of Japan. Tsunami warnings were issued for more than 50 countries on the Pacific coast.
