Genetics of the Oomycota: water molds and downy mildews. These organisms were formerly classified as fungi. They are filamentous protists which must absorb their food from the surrounding water or soil, or may invade the body of another organism to feed. Oomycetes cause certain diseases of plants and fish and play an important role in decomposition.
