Two low-lying, nearly level, sandy, coral islands surrounded by a narrow fringing reef with a depressed central area. Located in the North Pacific Ocean, about half way between Hawaii and Australia. The US took possession of the islands in 1857 and they remain an unincorporated territory, administered from Washington, DC, USA.
