Campbell County was organized in 1911. Its county seat is Gillette. As of 2005, the United States Census Bureau estimates that the population is 37,405, up from 33,698 in 2000. It is bordered by Sheridan and Johnson Counties to the west, Converse County to the south, Weston and Crook Counties to the east, and Powder River County, Montana to the north.
