Tennessee has several large metropolitan areas, consisting of major cities and surrounding counties and towns. In this category, find websites about and for these metro areas. As of the 2000 Census, Tennessee's largest city is Nashville, which is the center of a growing metropolitan area in Middle Tennessee. Historically, Memphis, at the southwest corner of the state, was the state's largest city. It is the center of a three-state metropolitan area that is often referred to as the Mid-South." Knoxville is the largest city in East Tennessee and the center of a metropolitan area that extends into the foothills of the Smoky Mountains. Chattanooga is the center of a metropolitan area in Southeast Tennessee and North Georgia. The Tri-Cities Metro Area of Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia is centered around the cities of Johnson City and Kingsport in Tennessee, and Bristol, which lies on both sides of the state boundary.
