Cape Island, SC is an undeveloped remote barrier island in the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge which averages well over 1,000 loggerhead sea turtle nests each season. Sea turtle activity accounts for almost 1/3 of all nests in South Carolina. Cape Island is the northern most barrier island in the refuge and is situated between the Santee Delta and Bulls Bay along the north central South Carolina coast. The island, accessible by boat from McClellanville, S.C., is 9km long; it was divided into two sections when Hurricane Bertha skirted the coast in 1996.
