Incorporated in 1907, Hermiston's name was inspired by the Robert Louis Stevenson's novel, "The Weir of Hermiston," which was popular at the time. The town's primary focus was on agriculture and irrigated farming. This continued through the 1970s with the building of large potato processing plants.
