Originally part of the Choctaw Nation, this county was created at statehood and takes its name from the Pushmataha District of the Choctaw Nation. Pushmataha was also the name of a Choctaw leader. Antlers, the county seat, is the site of several manufacturing companies that produce items such as custom mixed concrete, lumber, roof trusses, building materials and sportswear. Tuskahoma, last capital of the Choctaw Nation is the site of the Choctaw Council House, built in 1884 and noted for its fine architecture. A popular recreational area for outdoor enthusiasts, Pushmataha County offers locations such as the Kiamichi Mountains, Clayton Lake Recreational Area, Pine Creek State Park and Sardis Lake for sporting activities. Although tourism and recreation contribute a great deal to the county's economy, agriculture is still the basic component, and wheat is the major crop.
