The Village of Fairport, a suburb of Rochester, is located completely within the Town of Perinton in beautiful Upstate New York. It is a quaint village settled along the banks of the Erie Canal in 1789 and incorporated in 1867. The canal was largely responsible for the growth and prosperity of the village in the early 1800's. Mule drawn barges carrying lumber, coal, grain and flour made frequent stops at the village. Passengers on some of these barges commented on what a fair port this was; hence the village's name. The days of canal commerce are long past, and the waterway is now used primarily for recreation, with Fairport being a popular stopping place for pleasure boaters. The once industrial banks and tow paths have been transformed into parks, hiking trails, and stores and restaurants which are easily accessible from the village docks. Tour boats are available during the summer months to take a leisurely cruise down the Erie, while learning some of the history of the area and enjoying the picturesque scenery. The Main Street lift bridge, which allows tour and large pleasure boats to pass underneath, is unique. It is the only one of its kind that is built on an angle, with a discernible slope from one side to the other. Fairport is most famous for its Canal Days festival, held annually the first weekend of June. Main Street is closed to cars in favor of arts and crafts, live entertainment, and food vendors. Recently, over 200,000 visitors have attended each year.
