Samuel Low, who is regarded as the first pioneer to the area, built a saw mill and a grist mill near the area where State Street crosses the East Canada Creek in 1794. The next yeat John Faville settled on Ransom creek and built a grist mill and saw mill as well. Not long after, a small settlement began to develop, with a blacksmith, tannery and school. Some of the first families to settle the area were the Ayers, Brockett, Lamberson, Randall, Ransom, Spencer, and Spofford. These families settled and cleared the adjoining lands to make farms.
