The county-seat of Johnson County is located in the west central part of the state about 50 miles east of Kansas City at the junction of Highway 50 and 13. Other landmarks are the Blackwater river and the railroad that serves as the dividing point between north and south sides of town. The city is the Location of Central Missouri State University (opened in 1872), and among the prominent buildings are the court house and the railway station. Pertle Springs, now part of the University was once a summer resort and now consists of a lake, picnic area, pool and golf course. Nearby is Whiteman Air Force Base and Knob Noster State Park.
