Buzzards Bay is an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean, 30 miles long by 5-10 miles wide. It extends to the base of the Cape Cod peninsula in the northeast, is bounded on the southeast by the Elizabeth Islands and is connected to Cape Cod Bay via the Cape Cod Canal.
The name Buzzards Bay may be derived from a misidentification of ospreys in the area. Among the lighthouses in the bay are the 19th century structures of Bird Island, Dumpling Rock, Ned Point, Wing Neck and Cleveland. The Buzzards Bay Light Tower was the first lighthouse in the U.S. to be built over open water.
