The City of Beech Grove is located in the southeast portion of Marion County between I-65 and I-74 and is part of the greater Indianapolis metropolitan area. Beech Grove was incorporated in 1906 and is a city with nearly 15,000 residents who enjoy the benefits of a small town and the amenities of a large city. A mayor, clerk-treasurer and seven city council persons elected every four years govern the city. All municipal services such as police and fire protection, streets, parks, senior and community centers and other appropriate agencies are provided by the city administration. It is completely land locked by the city of Indianapolis and has a Unigov relationship with Indianapolis. It is one of the few cities where the citizens of the city are allowed to vote for their mayor and the mayor of Indianapolis. Beech Grove is mainly a residential community although many large businesses are located here. Probably the best-known early resident was Sarah T. Bolton, famed poet and author of “Paddle Your Own Canoe.”
