Pocatello, Idaho, "Gate City," is named for the Bannock chief who granted the Utah and Northern Railroad a right-of-way through the Fort Hall Indian Reservation for a rail line that would connect Salt Lake City, Utah, to Butte, Montana. Pocatello grew from a railroad stop to Pocatello Junction, a large repair and maintenance facility. The Idaho Legislture created Bannock County in 1893, with Pocatello as the county seat. The city was know as "Gate City" and was the largest rail center west of the Mississippi. Areas in the Pocatello metro area include American Falls, Arimo, Chubbuck, Fort Hall Indian Reservation, Inkom, Lava Hot Springs, and Pocatello.
