The Army National Guard of the United States (ARNGUS) includes combat and combat support units in every state and territory of the U.S. They can be quickly mobilized for either local emergencies and natural disasters, or for national service during wartime.
The governors of their respective states command these units during peacetime and the United States President when mobilized for national emergencies.
State Defense Forces (SDF) are units of organized militia as constituted and recognized by the separate states of the U.S. They are a state military force exclusively, and are not under the authority of the president or the Congress of the U.S.
These units typically include armor, infantry, cavalry, combat aviation, combat engineering and various logistical combat support units from separate detachment through brigade level units.
