Merritt Island located in Brevard County, south of Titusville and north of Melbourne along the east coast of Florida. The island is 40 miles long. It is seven miles wide at the north end but narrows to a point at the south. Most of the island's population occupies a suburban area of middle-class homes between state roads 528 and 520. North of State Road 528 is Kennedy Space Center, which covers 100,000 acres.

The Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, adjacent to the Space Center, occupies land managed by the U.S. Government. A 22-square mile wetlands area, it is home to over 300 species of birds. Treasured residents in the refuge include ghost crabs, loggerhead and green sea turtles, reptiles, raccoons and bobcats.

Central Merritt Island is a shopping, business and residential hub. A sprawling shopping mall offers shops, movie theaters, and office space. There are hundreds of other businesses, stores, restaurants, real estate and mortgage companies, banks and government offices. There is a also a light industrial section and an airport.

South of State Road 520 the island grows narrower and it is again residential. South Tropical Trail weaves its way through lush tropical vegetation and gorgeous homes along the Indian and Banana Rivers.
