Situated along the Atlantic Ocean, bordered by Delray Beach to the south and the communities of Briny Breezes and Ocean Ridge to the north, this community of about a thousand people forbids businesses by law. Aside from homes and condominiums, there is a town hall, a private school, and several private clubs including the historic Gulf Stream Golf Club, founded in the 1920s, which marked the town's beginning. According to popular wisdom, the club was started by a group of men from nearby Palm Beach eager to have a place of their own, safe from the publicity spotlight of Palm Beach social life and from the eyes of their wives as well. Addition of polo fields some years later helped to attract residential development. Today luxury homes stand where polo was once played. The town remains a quiet, little-known haven for the wealthy to this day, both for retirees and for families attracted by the town's school and clubs.
