Portland [Middlesex County] was incorporated from Chatham in 1841 and named from Portland, Dorsetshire, famed for quarries. Its original name was Conway.
Area, 24.9 sq. miles. Population, est., 8,796. Voting Districts, 1. Principal industries, agriculture, manufacture of automatic packaging machinery and corrugated boxes, precision tools, feldspar quarries and milling, rubber and plastic products, fertilizer, petroleum and bituminous product distributors, four boat yards and three golf courses.
