Canterbury [Windham County] Connecticut was settled in 1690 and set off from Plainfield and incorporated in 1702. It was named from Major Moses Mansfield. Originally called Ponde-town, its Indian name is Noubestuck.

Area, 40.2 sq. miles. Population, est., 4,690. Voting district, 1. Principal industries, agriculture and dairy products.
