San Diego lies on the coast of California, 15 miles north of the Mexican border. The city's land area covers 342 square miles. According to the 2000 census, approximately 1.25 million people live here, making it the seventh largest city in the United States, and the second largest city in California.
The city is sometimes called "The Birthplace of California," based on the Spanish fort and mission founded here in 1769. Alternatively, it is frequently called "America's Finest City" by local civic boosters.
Please note that although it lies within the city limits of San Diego, the community of La Jolla is maintained as a separate category. Sites related to La Jolla are found there, not here.
