Anaheim began in 1857 as a colony of German farmers and vintners. The city’s name is a composite of 'Ana' from the nearby Santa Ana River and 'heim' which is German for the word 'home'. Anaheim is the 2nd largest city in Orange County, the 10th largest city in California and the 59th largest in the nation.
