Ilulissat, widely known by its Danish name, Jakobshavn (Jacobs Harbour) is the third largest town in Greenland and home to more than 4500 inhabitants. Located 350 km north of the Polar Circle, it plays an important role in Greenland’s halibut fishing industry. Its proximity to the Ilulissat Ice Fjord makes it a popular tourist destination. Ilulissat was also the birthplace of Knud Rasmussen, a polar explorer and anthropologist whose first expedition began in 1902. He led several expeditions in the early 1900s including traveling over the Viscount Melville Sound and crossing the Northwest Passage by dogsled. Today, his house is home to the town museum.
