The Township of The Archipelago was incorporated on April 1, 1980, as the result of an order by the Ontario Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs amalgamating the existing townships of Georgian Bay South Archipelago and Georgian Bay North Archipelago. Before that time the territory now covered by the Archipelago was entirely composed of the geographic townships, with no prior history of local government activity other than the work done by several local roads boards.
