Sable Island is a large island, formed from a sand bar, off the southeast coast of Nova Scotia. The island is best known for being the site of hundreds of shipwrecks over the years as well as for the wild horses who inhabit it. Abandoned by the federal government of Canada in 1995, the island is now cared for by the Sable Island Preservation Trust, who co-ordinates research projects and the preservation of this unique ecosystem.
