Abercarn is located north-west of Newport and has a long history of coal mining in collieries that have now all closed. The Prince of Wales Colliery being one of the best know but sadly because of the tragedy of September 1878 when 268 men and boys died due to an explosion thought to be caused by a mining lamp.
