The contest was triggered by the resignation of Sir Alec Douglas-Home on 22 July, 1965. Contenders:

Ballot: 27 July, 1965 Edward Heath: 150, Reginald Maudling: 133, Enoch Powell: 15 The rules in place required a candidate to have both an absolute majority and at least a 15% margin of votes cast in the first ballot in order to win. As Heath did not have this, there would have been a second round, but Maudling conceded defeat.
