In April 1996 Cleveland became a ceremonial county with the following unitary councils: Hartlepool; Middlesbrough; Redcar and Cleveland (formerly Langbaurgh-on-Tees); Stockton-on-Tees Hartlepool and Stockton (North of the River Tees) are sometimes treated as part of County Durham. Langbaurgh-on-Tees, Middlesbrough and Stockton (South of the River Tees) are sometimes treated as part of North Yorkshire.
