Jack Vettriano - Scottish artist. Born in 1951 in eastern Scotland, Vettriano - at that time bearing the family name Hoggan - left school at 15 and followed his father down into the coal mines. He started painting at the age of 21, teaching himself to paint. He is now the UK's best selling artist, with his picture 'The Singing Butler' being the UK's best selling print. He has an homnorary degree from St Andrew's University, and was awarded the OBE in November 2003. But his pictures do not hang in any British art gallery.
