Dorotea is an inland municipality, the southernmost of Swedish Lapland. To the south, it borders to Strömsund municipality in Jämtland county. The main town and seat of the municipality is also called Dorotea. The name Dorotea comes from Frederica Dorothea Wilhelmina of Baden, who was Queen of Sweden until 1809. She gave new names to three villages in northern Sweden, which still bear the names Fredrika, Dorotea and Vilhelmina.
