Sterling was founded in 1958 as a boys' preparatory school. It was named after Margaret Sterling, the wife of Douglas Field, one of the founders. Its educational philosophy soon became rooted in the precepts developed by Kurt Hahn, the founder of Outward Bound. His compelling educational pillars included combining academics, physical challenge, craftsmanship, and service to others. Sterling is a small, four-year college, which specializes in environmental studies, leadership, and small-scale agriculture. Our interdisciplinary curriculum integrates experiential learning, work, and community experiences with traditional classroom academics.
