After previously existing as the Language Division of the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Languages was formed on January 1st, 1999, consisting of the nine departments of Asian and African Languages, English, Finno-Ugric Languages, Classical Philology, Linguistics, Scandinavian Languages, Romance Languages, Slavic Languages, and German. The Swedish Institute for North American Studies was also tied to the new faculty.

The department has sections for research in English language, English literature, and American literature, as well as a section for Celtic studies.
