The Chinese Shar-Pei is an ancient breed that originated in the southern provinces of China and served as a guardian of family and property, a herder, and a hunter. The dog population of China was virtually eliminated in the mid-1900's. Limited Shar-Pei breeding continued in Hong Kong and Taiwan and the Hong Kong Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1968. A Hong Kong breeder, Matgo Law, appealed to U.S. breeders to help save the breed and a limited number of dogs were imported. Today the Shar-Pei is a family companion, guardian, and watchdog.
The Shar-Pei is covered with loose folds of skin which gives the dog a wrinkled appearance, especially as a pup. It may have a shorter "horse" coat or longer "brush" coat. The breed ranges from 18-20" tall and weighs 35-55 pounds. It is easy-going, loyal, and affectionate, especially friendly with children, and wary of strangers.
Official recognition: FCI Group 2, AKC Group 6 - Non-Sporting Dogs, CKC Group 6 - Non-Sporting Dogs, KC Non-Sporting - Utility Group, ANKC Group 7 - Non Sporting.
