Muscular dystrophy (MD) is a genetic disorder that weakens the muscles. People with MD can't make the proteins needed for healthy muscles. There are many types of MD.
There is no cure, but doctors are working to find ways to fix the genes that make proteins for the muscles and create medicines that will work like the missing proteins. Muscle exercises, physical therapy, and breathing aids can help.
