This category contains information for patients, their families and caregivers, about Hypokalemia. This is a condition in which potassium moves from the outside of cells to the inside, decreasing levels in the blood.

Hypokalemia occurs with abnormal kidney function, excessive vomiting or diarrhea, effects of some medications, or malnutrition. Decreased potassium levels in the blood can cause the heart to beat abnormally; extremely low levels can cause cardiac arrest.
