Thyroid eye disease is known by many other terms, including TED, infiltrative thyroid ophthalmopathy, Graves' eye disease, Grave's ophthalmopathy, thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO), and von Basedow's ophthalmopathy. TED or TAO is an autoimmune process that was described by Graves in 1835 and by von Basedow in 1840. Thyroid eye disease may be associated with other autoimmune disorders such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
